Big blind ante

In tournaments using this format, a single ante is posted by the player in the big blind instead of every player anteing each hand, as cardroom rules for the format set it out. With blinds of 500/1,000, that player puts up 1,000 as the blind and 1,000 as the ante; the ante is dead and goes straight into the pot, while the blind stays live for pre-flop betting. A short stack pays the blind first, then the ante, and can still win the whole ante. The ante becomes a per-round charge rather than a per-hand one.

Blinds

A blind is a required bet made before any cards are dealt, used in button games to stimulate action and initiate play, as a standard cardroom rulebook sets out. Blinds are posted before players look at their cards and normally count as part of the poster's bet, though a structure may treat a blind other than the big blind as dead. With two blinds, the small blind sits immediately clockwise from the button and the big blind next; the largest regular blind is the big blind. First-round action begins left of the blinds.

Bounty

A bounty is a prize collected for eliminating another entrant, run as a distinct tournament format under a casino's posted tournament rules. Entrants pay a bounty fee on top of the buy-in and entry fee; the amount is fixed and published beforehand. Each registrant receives a value chip equal to that bounty, which must stay visible on the table. Knocking a player out transfers that player's bounty chip to the winner. A player may collect several bounties during an event but forfeits only one on being eliminated.

Buy-in

The cost to enter a tournament, or the minimum amount needed to sit down in a cash game at a specific table. Usually twenty times the big blind. For example, at a five-ten table the minimum is two hundred.

Connecticut iGaming

Connecticut channels regulated gaming through a narrow set of gatekeepers. An applicant for a gaming business licence must be associated with one of the Tribes, with the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, or with another licensee that has contracted with one of them. The licence categories the state names include online gaming operator, online gaming service provider and retail sports wagering. Prospective suppliers are directed to approach the entity they seek to contract with for application details, and employees to their employer, which must itself hold one of these licences or a master wagering licence.

Czech Gambling Act

Act No. 186/2016 sets the Czech framework for gambling: which game types exist, the conditions for operating them, responsible-gambling measures, and the competences of the administrative authorities. It applies to gambling operated on Czech territory, and a game run over the internet counts as operated there even where it only partly targets people residing in the country. The recognised types include lotteries, odds bets, totalizator games, bingo, technical games and live games, the last covering roulette, card games including tournament formats, and dice. Most types may also run online, under a basic licence issued by the Ministry to an operator meeting capital and ownership conditions.

Delaware iGaming

Delaware's state lottery, which operates within the Department of Finance, launched what it describes as the first authorised online gaming system in the country, known as iGaming, on 7 November 2013. Equity

Equity is the share of the pot a player expects to earn, computed under the assumption that no further betting occurs and using only the cards in that player's hand together with the cards already revealed on the board. It is obtained by multiplying the player's probability of winning by the size of the pot. Subtracting the cost of a player's betting actions from equity gives expected profit. A simulation study of Texas Hold'em treats changes in equity from card deals as luck and changes from betting decisions as skill.

Ontario separates who regulates its online gambling market from who conducts it. iGaming Ontario was established in July 2021 as a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, a separate legal entity that conducts and manages internet gaming offered through private operators as Canada's Criminal Code requires, and that signs operating agreements with those operators. The Act bearing its name was proclaimed on 12 May 2025, making it an independent agency. Nevada online poker

Nevada treats interactive gaming as a distinct licence category in the fee and tax schedule administered by the Nevada Gaming Commission and the Nevada Gaming Control Board. An operator of interactive gaming licence authorises the holder to conduct the business of operating interactive gaming from Nevada; the initial fee is 500,000 dollars covering two years, and 250,000 dollars annually thereafter. Two supporting licences complete the chain: an interactive gaming service provider licence at 1,000 dollars a year, and a licence to manufacture interactive gaming systems for use in the state, at 125,000 dollars for the first year and 25,000 dollars annually after that.

New Jersey internet gaming

New Jersey regulates internet gambling at state level through the Division of Gaming Enforcement, a unit of the Attorney General's Office that enforces the state's casino gaming laws and publishes both the internet gaming regulations and the list of approved internet gaming sites. The Casino Control Commission is the separate state agency that licenses Atlantic City's casinos and their key employees and hears appeals from decisions of the Division's Director. Players may submit internet gaming disputes to the Division, which is responsible for complaints concerning internet casino permit holders, and a state self-exclusion programme is available to anyone who wishes to bar themselves from play. This regime covers New Jersey only; poker is not named separately in the source cited, and the position in other US states is not established by it.

Pot odds

The ratio between the money already in the pot and the amount a player must pay to call in order to keep playing. With 100 in the middle and an opponent betting 10, the pot stands at 110 and the call costs 10, so the pot is laying odds of 11-to-1. The comparison is the calling standard: a call is correct when the chance that the hand is best exceeds those odds, and equally correct on a draw when the odds of making a better hand are greater than the odds the pot offers. The same calculation therefore governs both made hands and drawing hands.

Rake is the fee a cardroom operator takes from the pot in exchange for supplying a dealer, a table and a place to play, defined that way in Florida's cardroom statute as either a set amount or a percentage. State law caps it at a posted maximum, forbids tying it to how much players win, and requires that it be taken visibly and placed in a designated rake area in plain sight. Operators must post all participation costs, including the rake, in the room and at each table.

Re-entry

Under the standardised TDA tournament rules, a re-entry is treated like a fresh entry: re-entrants are sold full starting stacks and randomly draw a table and seat from the same pool as new players, and are dealt in except between the small blind and the button. In re-entry events where a player is permitted to forfeit chips and buy a new stack, the forfeited chips are removed from play rather than left in circulation. Satellite

A satellite is a qualifying tournament whose prizes must include a buy-in to a larger tournament, as North Dakota's gaming rules define it. Satellites are run at a site in conjunction with the main event, carry their own posted rules and schedule, and their fees count toward the same gross proceeds. Self-exclusion

Self-exclusion is a formal agreement a person enters into not to gamble, described by Britain's gambling regulator as a tool for those who recognise their gambling is harming them. Once agreed, the business must close the account, return any balance and strip the person from its marketing lists; if they try to gamble during the period, it must take reasonable steps to stop them. Multi-operator schemes cover the same type of land-based gambling in an area from one request, and a separate scheme does the same for online operators.

Showdown

The showdown decides the winner when more than one player still contends for the pot after every betting round is finished, as a casino poker room's rule book sets it out. The player whose final bet or raise was called shows first; if the last round was checked through, the first to show is the player left of the button, or left of the dealer in stud, with the rest following clockwise. A winning hand must be tabled in full and clearly identified.

Side pot

A side pot is the separate pot formed when a player facing a bet larger than their table stakes calls all in, as Colorado's gaming rule for player-banked card games describes it. The portion of the bet exceeding that call is either returned or matched by the remaining players into the side pot, and there is no cap on how many side pots a hand may create. The all-in player keeps receiving cards; at the showdown they can win only the pot they contested, the second-best hand taking the side pot.

Sweden's Gambling Act (2018:1138) covers games played for money or prizes with monetary value that are provided in Sweden; online gambling not directed at the Swedish market is treated as falling outside it. Licences go only to applicants judged to have the knowledge, experience, organisation and general fitness to run the operation, and are refused to the bankrupt, to minors and to those with serious criminal or business failings. Spillemyndigheden

The Danish Gambling Authority treats online casino as one licensed category, covering roulette, blackjack, baccarat, punto banco, poker, online bingo, gambling on gaming machines and other games mixing skill and chance, which Danish law calls combination games. The Gambling Act reaches such games only where three conditions hold together: participants pay a stake, that payment gives a chance of winning a prize of any kind, and the outcome involves an element of chance. Games meeting the definition may be offered only under an online casino licence issued by the authority, which anyone wanting to operate in Denmark must apply for.

String bet

A string bet or raise is an attempt to bet or raise in multiple movements that includes a return to one's own stack without first declaring the intention verbally, or a visual deception meant to draw action out of turn before the action is complete, as a licensed poker room's standard operating procedures define it. Dealers are responsible for calling it, and a call made by a player must be confirmed by a floor person. A player protects the right to raise by declaring it or putting the full amount in at once.

Texas hold'em

The flop game in which each player receives two down cards as a personal hand, known as hole cards, followed by a round of betting. The dealer then burns a card and places three board cards simultaneously as the flop, after which a further burn and single card follow for the turn and again for the river, each with its own betting round. The board cards are community cards, and a player may use any five-card combination from the board and personal cards to make the best possible five-card poker hand, including using all five board cards and none of their own to play the board. A dealer button is used, and the usual structure has two blinds, though the game can be played with one blind, multiple blinds, an ante, or a combination of blinds plus an ante.
