Big blind ante
In tournaments using this format, a single ante is posted by the player in the big blind instead of every player anteing each hand, as cardroom rules

With blinds of 500/1,000, that player puts up 1,000 as the blind and 1,000 as the ante; the ante is dead and goes straight into the pot, while the blind stays live for pre-flop betting. A short stack pays the blind first, then the ante, and can still win the whole ante. The ante becomes a per-round charge rather than a per-hand one.
